Perhaps no industry has come farther, faster, in the past 25 years than the medical industry. Innovations such as artificial hearts, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines, virtual surgery, pacemakers, and countless other technologies have evolved into the realm of the commonplace. And in todays environment of feared bioterrorism, the medical industry has been forced to advance even faster with new detection techniques and treatments for airborne bacteria and poisonous gases. Along with industry, federal, and university laboratories, NASA has consistently been in the forefront of innovative medical developments. Ingestible thermometers, microencapsulated drugs, insulin delivery systems, cool vests, laser angioplasty, and heart pumps can all trace their roots to NASA-developed technologies. One of the most important innovations of the past two decades was developed by world-famous heart surgeon, Dr. Michael DeBakey, of the Baylor College of Medicine, who is known for having performed the first successful multiorgan transplants. Having previously developed a crucial component of the heart-lung machine and having paved the way for open-heart surgery, Dr. DeBakey teamed with NASA for another invention in the 1990s.
As I was completing my residency at Childrens National Medical Center, I, as many of my third-year colleagues, found myself wondering, where to go from here? Everything in our previous experience had been laid out in precise order, like check boxes waiting to be completed. Completing residency was the last check box on the list. We now had choices–fellowship, primary care, advocacy, etc. Enter Information Technology (IT). I can honestly say that, if I had been seriously considering a clinical job offer, I would probably be working in a clinic somewhere today. The lack of job, however, opened me to trying something new and different. When I heard about the informatics position, in which I would be able to help create a new computerized order entry system at Childrens, my hospital, I listened. and accepted the offer. Flash forward to Day One. My first day working in IT was definitely an experience to be remembered. I did not have to arrive at work until 8 am! I was able to sleep in! I actually had an office (cubicle) with my own phone and a laptop! As a resident, we had a lounge/classroom and had to vie for phone and computer usage wherever we went. In IT I had my own phone number and could give my new extension to whomever and could receive direct calls and messages.

Now that our esteemed state Legislature has again stifled any and all attempts to tighten the gift-giving from lobbyists and special interest groups, perhaps its time for a statewide citizen initiative to be placed on the ballot. Surveys have shown that a great majority of the residents of Utah would prefer to see tougher disclosure and gift-giving restrictions placed on lobbyists. The threshold for reporting gifts will be lowered from $50 to $10 per gift to any member of the states governing body.
Dear Abby: Im writing in response to the letter from “Reader in the East” (March 21), asking what to give someone who has just graduated from the police academy. Abby, the patron saint of police officers and law enforcement is St. Michael, not St. Christopher! Dear Troopers Wife: Thank you for the excellent gift idea, and for straightening me out about who the patron saint of law enforcement is. (Many folks corrected me on that one.) Others offered alternative suggestions for gifts. Read on: Dear Abby: Police officers spend many hours in their patrol cars. Thermal coffee mugs and coolers in which to carry their lunch make great gifts. Also, if someone really wants to go all out, an extra pair of handcuffs always comes in “handy.” (Pun intended!) I hope this helps –Police Officers Wife in Houston
One of my favorite companies is an organization called Alternative Gifts International. AGI is a non-profit, interfaith agency, raising funds each year for global gifts in its Alternative Gift Markets held nationwide and from individual donors. Their mission is to send authentic, life-giving gifts to the needy of the world–gifts that build a partnership with oppressed people in crisis and that protect and preserve the earths endangered environment. Ninety percent of all monies collected are used for the designated projects. Gifts can be given in any amount for projects around the world, from a Solar Water Pasteurization project in Tanzania, to Organic Gardening in Belize, to a Threatened River System in the Dominican Republic, to Homeless Americans in the USA, and to literally dozens of other needy and worthwhile projects. Participants can choose a variety of card styles and have the gift cards sent directly to their recipient, or the cards can be sent to you so a personal note can be written. Their websi te is very comprehensive, detailing the organization and each different project. A snail mail listing (also comprehensive) is available. This is a not only a worthwhile cause, but can be used as a very fruitful learning experience to teach children about geography, different living conditions around the world, and the environment. Another great alternative gift idea is to donate in the recipients name to their favorite charity. Even the most hard-to-shop-for person on ones list would appreciate this gift. From animals, to trees and the environment, to childrens hospitals and individual health issues, there is a cause out there for everyone.

time management

I was recently asked to give some “time-management tips” at a womens conference, and all I can say is “ha!” and also “as if!” Still, I did my best. Heres what I came up with: Basically, when it comes to time management, youre either a Martha or a Mary. (BTW, I am aware that using these sisters from the New Testament as representative types has been done to death. But whatever.) So how can you tell which one you are? Easy! Just take my free quiz!
TIME MANAGEMENTTime is probably the most valuable asset available to people and organizations. Understanding how to manage ones time can contribute mightily to the success of personal and professional lives. However, as with any other asset, it may be wasted if its not valued.Wasted time cannot be replaced. With increasing demands both in the workplace and at home, a great need exists for time to become more respected, valued, and balanced.

Fun With GPS
GPSTo overcome shortcomings in earlier navigation systems, United States developed another system: Navstar (Navigation Satellite for Time and Ranging) Global Positioning System. This system consists of 24 operational satellites equally divided into six different orbital planes (each containing four satellites) spaced at 60#x00B0; intervals. The new system can measure to within 33 ft, (10 m), whereas earlier systems (e.g. Transit) were accurate only to 0.1 mi (0.16 km). Military users have access to systems with still greater accuracy.Ground users commonly rely on GPS receivers. The receivers are small, hand-held devices that receive and decode GOS satellite signals. Small differences in the time lapse between signal receptions from three orbiting satellite signals (allowing triangulation of signals) are mathematically converted to latitude, longitude, and altitude. Sophisticated hand-held units are capable of determining latitude and longitude to a thousandth of an arc minute; these units show changes in reading as vehicles move very short distances). With GPS, two types of systems are available with different frequencies and levels of accuracy. The Standard Positioning System (SPS) is used primarily by civilians and commercial agencies. As of midnight, May 1, 2000, the SPS system became 30 times more accurate when President William Jefferson Clinton ordered that the Selective Availability (SA) component of SPS be discontinued. SA was the deliberate decrease of accurate positioning information available for commercial or civilian use. The SPS obtains information from a frequency labeled GPS L1. The United States military has access to GPS L1 and a second frequency, L2. The use of L1 and L2 permits the transfer of data with a higher level of security. In addition to heightened security, the United States military also has access to much more accurate positioning by using the Precise Positioning System (PPS). Use of the PPS is usually limited to the U.S. military and other domestic government agencies.

Strange but true, wide-screen TVs are the surprise success story of the year. According to the Consumer Electronics Manufacturers Association (CEMA), sales of TVs 30 inches and larger are growing at a compound annual rate of 27% since 1989, and sales to dealers of projection TVs are up 20% so far in 1998.According to CEMA, TV growth is better than most other categories. Whats more, manufacturers are worried that demand may actually create a shortage as companies struggle to keep up with supplies.
Theres one part of Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America lnc.s Irvine headquarters most visitors dont get to see. Its dubbed “the torture chamber.” Before Mitsubishi engineers sign off on the production of a big-screen TV, prototypes are put through the wringer. Even after engineers give the go-ahead to make a set, TVs undergo more grueling endurance tests. In one room, big-screen TVs are slowly cooked until they fail. Water garden meeting The Topeka Area Water Garden Society will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, at Ward Meade Park, 124 N.W. Fillmore. Dont let garden cleanup chores become an overwhelming source of dread; the garden should be a place to enjoy. Simply work a little bit every day, filling a small plastic bag with debris with each visit to the garden and soon enough the job will be done.
Its not too late to add instant vibrant colour to your garden with a beautiful hanging basket or planted container. At Dobbies Garden World you will find a wide selection of pre-planted baskets and containers in different sizes to suit any garden or patio. Or you can choose from the extensive range of flowering plants and colourful pots on offer to create your own individual look. Handy hint: Remember to rotate your hanging baskets to keep even growth and flowering from all aspects.
Prune out and remove dead rose flowers as soon as they have withered. Cut just behind the immature rose hip at the base of the flower and remove this and all the dead petals. This will prevent your roses from putting essential energy into making seed and will encourage the plants to produce more flowers. Remove any leaves showing signs of disease and either burn them or put them in the bin. If you have ordered bare rooted roses to plant this autumn and winter then decide where you intend to plant them and prepare the ground thoroughly. Container grown roses can be planted now.

Evidence based dentistry on lasers in dentistry; proceedings. International workshop of Evidence Based Dentistry on Lasers in Dentistry (1st: 2006: Aachen, Germany) Ed. by Norbert Gutknecht et al.
J. Edward Murphy Jr. PennWell Publishing Co., 1421 S. Sheridan Road/P.O. Box 1260, Tulsa, OK 74101. 1996. Indexed. 300 pages. $69.95 Mobile Dentistry is written for health care professionals contemplating developing a mobile or nontraditional dental practice. The author explains each aspect of the development and implementation of a nontraditional dental practice, starting with the physical components essential to delivery, such as selecting equipment. He covers staffing and business needs, and ends with techniques for overcoming barriers that may be met throughout the process. Addressed are the needs particular to treating patients in long-term-care, skilled nursing facilities (integrating dental treatment planning with multidisciplinary assessment), and mobile dental practices (marketing, infection control, and management of laboratory procedures), as well as a chapter on mobile missionary programs. The book specifically addresses the requirements of a dental practitioner, however, the needs of the dental hygiene practitioner can be easily extrapolated. Additionally, because the author includes learning objectives at the beginning of each chapter, it may be utilized as a text for students. Mobile Dentistry is very timely, addressing a portion of the population with significant oral health care needs. Many are unable to travel to the traditional dental office or reside in long-term health care facilities. Others live in areas where traditional dental care is not attainable. Access to care is a concern for both target populations. The reader is provided with step-by-step suggestions to ensure a successful transition from the traditional dental setting to the nontraditional setting where underserved populations can be treated.

BRITAINS CHARITY law is facing its biggest shake-up for 400 years, with the Charities Bill - the draft of which has been scrutinised by a parliamentary committee - expected to be announced in the Queens speech later this month. Indeed, one of the most significant aspects of the draft Bill is that all charities will have to show that they provide a public benefit in one of 12 key areas, thereby protecting their credibility with the public. The consequent controversy has, perhaps not surprisingly, largely been on whether independent schools and private hospitals should get to keep their charitable status. So far, indications are that schools will probably get to keep their charitable status, whereas the situation could be trickier for hospitals. But while this debate is important, we should not lose sight of the benefits of the rest of the Bill, according to Sush Amar of the Charity Commission. “The thing about the Bill that sometimes gets lost in all the fury about private hospitals and schools is that there is virtually no charity that it wont help in some way.”

The Brahmin in the house opposite ours Eats late, and tosses His leaf(*) on the street. For that scrap, Two dogs tear each other apart In the deserted street. Their howls Wake up dogs sleeping elsewhere In town. Others in distant streets Follow. Even dogs in the outskirts Jump into the fray. The noise travels– Beyond the rice-fields and orchards. Dogs in the next town take it up. Its an endless chain. However, If one were to stop and ask The last dog the cause of it all, I wonder what he would have to say.* In South India, orthodox Brahmins eat off plantain leaves, not plates.

ORLANDO, Fla.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Nov. 5, 1998–Many private and public driver education instructors are not getting adequate or standardized training, according to a recent AAA survey. As a result, hundreds of thousands of teens are allowed to begin driving with insufficient knowledge of basic driving techniques. Even in the states with the strictest of standards, the amount of professional training needed to become a driving instructor pales in comparison to other professions.
Straight As Mean Nothing Many states now require a driver education course before a teen can get a license. These requirements are based on the assumption that drivers who complete the classes are more knowledgeable and therefore safer drivers. Unfortunately, studies dont support this assumption. Some of the conclusions result from the specifics of Quebecs laws, but the final conclusion, that drivers education programs have little or no impact on the number and severity of auto accidents, remains valid. Efforts to improve drivers education programs do little to alter these findings.
The Journal staff Like gingerbread men in a land of hungry giants, driver education coordinators in some school districts are feeling uneasy as school boards and administrators look for tempting ways to cope with tight budgets. “Theres certainly a lot of discussion across the state constantly,” said Mike McGinley, president of the Wisconsin Driver and Traffic Safety Education Association and coordinator of the driver education program for Oshkosh schools. “It seems to be one of the first subject areas looked at when theres a budget crisis.

Furthermore, Cape Flower Fields is pleased to announce that we have joined forces with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International (JDRF) and 10% of the retail price of every Designer Grade Protea Bouquet sold will be donated to help research efforts to find a cure for diabetes. JDRF is the nations leading nonprofit nongovernmental funder of diabetes research. In a typical year JDRF donates 85% of dollars raised directly to research and education. We are also proud to be part of the San Diego Grown 365(TM) Program of the San Diego County Farm Bureau. This is a program that promotes products and produce locally grown in San Diego County. #1 Select Designer Grade Protea Bouquets refers to Protea flowers and foliage that are reserved for professional flower designers. The stems are straight and more than 20 in length and the quality is superb. In the past, only flower design professionals had access to these flowers as single stem items. But, with better growing and pruning techniques, we are now able to grow more long stemmed Proteas and Cape Greens and are making them available directly to the consumer.
Darwins frustration stemmed, in large part, from the remarkably rapid origin and diversification (as shown by the fossil record) of flowering plants within a brief period of earths history–and his own strong views that evolutionary change was typically a slow and gradual process. Darwin was convinced that the origin of angiosperms was one of the great challenges in the effort to decipher the evolutionary history of life. What so impressed him remains impressive today: how some 250,000 species of flowering plants have come to dominate the earths vegetation. They flourish in the tropics and in the arctic, in alpine terrain, as well as in deserts and lakes. They range from mighty oak trees to woody and herbaceous vines, from underground parasites to carnivores that prey on insects, from floating aquatics to epiphytes (plants that live on other plants), such as orchids and bromeliads. Darwin was also astute enough to recognize the importance of a question that intrigues evolutionary biologists today: how to square such diversity with the fact that flowering plants are far and away the youngest major lineage of plants. Their evolutionary origin can be traced in the fossil record to the Early Cretaceous, some 130 million years ago. In contrast, conifers had a head start of more than 170 million years. By all measures, angiosperms have diversified to a greater extent and in a shorter time than any other group of plants. What were the progenitors of angiosperms? What did the first ones look like? How did their many unique biological features evolve? Why did the origin and early diversification of flowering plants proceed so rapidly? To shed light on such questions, I have studied extant plant species belonging to the same ancient flowering plant lineages that flourished in the days of dinosaurs. My findings, together with the recent work of other botanists, indicate that many of the century-old assumptions about the biological features of the first flowering plants and the subsequent diversification of early angiosperms are fundamentally wrong.
As you travel the country lane through farmland east of Watsonville, California, nothing prepares you for the surprises at roads end. Not the green patchwork of strawberry or lettuce fields, or the chocolate squares of freshly churned soil between them, or even the distant golden hills. Nothing, except maybe a sign near the gate that modestly announces Country Essences Flowers, the 10-acre ranch that floral designer Linda Arietta calls home. But on the patio behind the 100-year-old farmhouse, just past the barbecue area where guests gather for yet another of Ariettas memorable Saturday evening parties, the palette ignites. Brilliant blooms are everywhere: in pots, in beds, in vases, even on exterior walls. Ariettas bouquets for the party are floral fireworks, color-matched to vases and dishes, and as vividly rendered as still-life paintings. On one table, an arrangement of blue larkspur, bright salmon-pink godetias, and white lilies echoes the colors of watermelon slices on a cobalt blue platter. On another table, asters in pink, rose, white, and lavender play off the Caribbean beach colors of the striped umbrella above them.Ariettas flower beds, like her bouquets, are joyful expressions of color and fantasy. An old watering can and a fruit crate filled with magenta petunias are among the many personal touches that embellish her garden.

Have you ever thought of your kitchen as a laboratory? Whenever you make something in your kitchen, you are using science. Cooks, like scientists, combine and change materials to create something new. Everything in the world is made of chemicals. When chemicals are mixed together, interesting things can happen. In laboratories, scientists mix and experiment with chemicals. In kitchens, cooks mix chemicals also, but call them ingredients. A scientist in a laboratory follows an experiment. A cook in a kitchen follows a recipe. Both need to follow directions and measure carefully. They both use special equipment. A scientist may use test tubes and a cook may use bake pans. For both of them, temperature and timing are very important.

health insurance plans

07 Nov 2008 | Tagged as: Uncategorized

Its becoming increasingly expensive for small businesses in Alaska to provide health insurance benefits to employees. Offering good health insurance benefits is one of the best ways companies can ensure their employees loyalty. Gretchen Boone, director of Gold Creek Child Development Center in Juneau, said thats the reason she offers health insurance. Unfortunately for many small businesses, health insurance is difficult to afford and employees oftentimes cannot buy insurance on their own; however, this doesnt mean that there are no options. By understanding the health insurance problem, exploring the types of insurance available, finding out what their employees want, and selecting an option within their benefits budget, even small employers may find a way to offer health coverage to their employees.
Health insurance can help protect you and your family from the costs of illness or injury. There are three main types of health insurance-indemnity plans, health maintenance organizations and preferred provider organizations-and sometimes employers offer one plan of each type from which you can choose. Your choice will depend on your healthcare needs and your pocketbook. Remember, lower premiums doesnt necessarily mean less expensive in the long run if services you need arent covered. Fee-for-service plans require you to pay monthly premiums, an annual deductible, and coinsurance, which is usually a percentage-often 20 percent-of your healthcare bills. You can usually go to any health care professional or hospital you want (as long as the type of services provided are covered).
Determining your specific health insurance needs and choosing a plan that is best for you and your family–and your pocketbook–can be a daunting task but its a necessary one. Without insurance, one serious illness or accident could wipe you out financially. Married or single, children or no children, health insurance is simply one of those necessities of modern life that you must have in order to protect yourself. But it is very important that people investigate whichever club, association or organization is offering the insurance plan to insure that it is solvent and reliable. A Commonwealth Fund study notes that such plans have a long history marred by financial instability and even fraud, and that licensing requirements that are often less stringent than those imposed on traditional insurers mean the plans have a greater risk of becoming insolvent when claims suddenly or unexpectedly exceed their ability to pay them. You can contact an insurance agent-perhaps the agent who provides your car or home insurance-or research various companies by contacting their sales departments or reading about them on the Internet. Your state probably has an insurance commission or department that can provide a list of insurers (look the government listings section of your phone book); some agencies even provide information on the number of complaints filed against specific companies. (For information specific to various insurers as well as about your rights as a consumer, see Resources section at the end of this article.)

Byline: Hazel Ettienne , campaigning Wakefield MP Mary Creagh (left) is pushing a Bill to provide healthier school lunches A BATTLE to improve school meals and tackle child obesity is being waged by a Yorkshire MP.
Whether you are dropping your child off at school, walking through an amusement park or entertainment complex, or merely strolling down your hallway to give an adjustment, you cant help but notice the rise of obesity in children. What was once rarely seen in children 20-30 years ago has become an epidemic in our country and around the world. In the United States, childhood obesity has doubled in the past 20 years: Of children between 6-11 years of age, 15.3% are at or above the 95th percentile of the body mass index (BMI) on standard growth charts based on reference data from the 1970s.1,2 Of children 12-19 years of age, 15.5% are in this category. Recent data revealed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that children younger than 5 years of age, across all ethnic groups, have a significant increase in overweight and obesity.Other Westernized cultures are also seeing the same alarming trend. Childhood obesity in Canada has tripled over the past 20 years. Obesity among children 7-13 years of age rose from 5% in 1981 to 17% in 1996 for boys, and 15% for girls.3 England, Scotland and Spain are also recognizing this problem and attempting to tackle the battle of the bulge.

While savvy driving saves gas, some driving techniques popular among hypermilers are dangerous and illegal. — Check tire pressure at least once a month and inflate tires to the vehicle manufacturers standards listed in the owners manual. Fuel efficiency is reduced by up to 2 percent for each pound of pressure tires are under-inflated.
If its not your brother-in-law, its the local news or your chat group — everybody has tips for saving gas, but how well do they really work? Heres the scoop from the experts to save you from going out of your way for little return. Of course, everybody wants to save gas if possible. Even though prices have dropped a tad lately, theyre still painfully high. A gallon of regular unleaded gas cost $2.75 in the Vallejo metropolitan area, $2.87 in the Oakland metro area and $2.74 in the Stockton metro area as of this Wednesday. First, forget about those devices purporting to help save gas, such as pills to be dropped in the gas tank, additives or magnets.

He hit a walk-off home run in the 10th inning against the Orioles, then booked it to the House of Blues to play at the release party for his self-titled, 12-track CD. 2 Bernie Williams, DH, Yankees. Williams, perhaps the player most associated with the often repressed artistic side of baseball jocks, learned classic guitar as a child and released a jazz-style 11-track CD of mostly instrumental music in 2003. 4 Coco Crisp, LF, Red Sox. A rap he penned, We Got That Thing, made its debut on Oh Say Can You Sing?–a 2005 collection of cover songs and original recordings by 10 current players and Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith.
This report analyzes the current market landscape for digital music and MP3 players, focusing on trends in music services and hardware as technologies evolve and market dynamics shift. The report also features survey data regarding ownership and usage of MP3 players as well as consumer attitudes toward music services. Consumer interest in portable MP3 players varies by country, with the French and Chinese showing strong intentions to purchase an MP3 player within the next 12 months, said Harry Wang. Past device ownership also seems to have a positive impact on consumers future purchase intentions, with the exception of Germany, so device manufacturers would improve their marketing efficiency by focusing on existing MP3 owners.

The beverage milk business has come a long way, but sales data tell us there is a lot more to do. Almost 10 years ago, I wrote a column for Dairy Foods that asked the question: Can milk be niched? Food marketing experts love to talk about the virtues of niche marketing and valued-added, specialty products. But the question remains: Is niche marketing appropriate for the fluid milk business? * Most milk was consumed at home, but consumers were spending more time and money in restaurants.
Program administrator expands beyond its child care and senior care foundation Greg Thompson, chairman and CEO of the Atlanta-based Thomco, a managing general agency that specializes in providing insurance for niche markets in the property and casualty insurance industry, keeps a sharp eye on trends developing in the business. Thats because he prefers not to follow them. Perhaps this renegade approach to writing program business that has brought Gregs firm such success sterns from his early days with Thomco, which was founded in 1977 by his father, Roy. Greg had been working with Marsh McLennan at the time, and his father persuaded him to come on board at Thomco in order to make it a family business. Under his fathers leadership, Thomco was a wholesale operation that pursued a broad range of excess and surplus lines business regionally. When Greg joined the firm, he decided to refocus the companys efforts into the niche programs area on a national basis.

LOAN PROPOSALSPreparing a solid loan proposal can be very time consuming, but it has proven to be the best way for a small business owner to demonstrate his or her understanding of the business and its financial demands to potential lenders and investors. Furthermore, the business plan portion of the loan proposal can serve as a sort of handbook for running the business. It presents criteria against which managements strategy and decisions can be continually evaluated. Overall, a formal loan proposal should illustrate why the small business is a good credit risk by placing it within the context of its market and competition, explaining any peaks and valleys in cash flow, and emphasizing the strengths of the management team. The Small Business Administration publication Handbook for Small Business outlines some of the elements that should be included in a good loan proposal. It should begin with a summary page that provides contact information for the company, the amount of the loan request, the companys intended purpose for the funds, and the proposed repayment terms.

Targeting niches has become an important and effective strategy for many skin care suppliers, especially small players. Some 78 million baby boomers will turn 50 over the next 10 years, says Al Springer, director of the new product group at the company. The nations 60 million seniors spend more money in drug stores than any other group. They purchase 71% of all prescription drugs and 37% of all over-the-counter products. Our strategy in skin care is to be a supplier that adds value for retailers through education, products and programs targeting that new general market. Medicis has developed a program aimed at older consumers that includes trade media tie-in opportunities, educational initiatives, in-store events, health fairs, focus groups and direct-mail campaigns. The company uses its knowledge of the senior market to support such products as its Zostrix analgesic cream and Esoterica fade cream. Its targeted approach to marketing is behind two straight years of double-digit sales gains for Esoterica, a 56-year-old brand, according to Springer.

A flurry of more sophisticated skin care launches helped drug stores maintain their market dominance of the $2.1 billion skin care market. Q:I AM about to embark on a quest to build a home theater system in my basement. I recently purchased a 50-inch plasma HDTV and I have a few questions about how to complete the project. My budget for surround sound is rather modest so I have decided to go with a pair of the $89 Best Buy Insignia NS- B2111 speakers that you recommended as the front left and right speakers. Finally, what do you recommend for the sub-woofer? I would like to spend no more than around $500-$600 for the speakers and receiver (I am looking into the Onkyo TX-SR304 as the receiver for around $200).

Every day about 465 million dollars are printed in the United States!! Paper money is made at The Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Washington, D.C. and Fort Worth, Texas. Dollar bills are printed on paper made from a secret blend of cotton and linen. Red and blue silk threads are mixed into the paper as it is being made. Look closely and you will see them. This paper is so strong, it will last about 18 months and can be folded about 4000 times without tearing. Paper money is made by Intaglio printing, which is very hard to counterfeit (copy). First a design is engraved into a metal plate. Then ink, made from a secret recipe, is spread over the metal. Next, a machine presses the paper onto the metal plate to create a copy of the design. As many as 32 bills can be printed on a single sheet of paper.

Researchers have attempted to assess which family factors are most likely to predict elevated cholesterol levels in children. Factors that seem likely to predict high cholesterol levels in children are family history of cardiovascular disease and parental cholesterol level. The above table illustrates the percentage of children who would be screened for elevated cholesterol if parental cholesterol level is used as a factor in making the decision when to screen. These percentages represent the results of the Lipid Research Clinics Prevalence Study, reported in March 1992. In general, most pediatricians recommend that all children and adolescents eat a diet low in saturated fatty acid, low in total fat, and low in cholesterol.

CholesterolCholesterol is the most abundant sterol in animal tissues, making up as much as 25 percent of cell membranes. Cholesterol may be found free or as part of cholesteryl esters . It is a precursor molecule for many steroid hormones, including glucocorticoids , androgens and estrogen , aldosterone, and mineralocorticoids. A major component of lipoproteins, it is also the precursor for bile salts and bile acids, which are necessary for digestion. Gallstones contain large amounts of cholesterol.Plants contain no cholesterol. In animals cholesterol synthesis occurs in many cells, but most cholesterol synthesis occurs in the liver. Food products from animals contain cholesterol, and the average adult consumes around 450 milligrams (0.016 ounces) per day. Dairy products and egg yolks are particularly rich in cholesterol. Diets low in fat content and high in vegetables, especially those containing polyunsaturated lipids , can help to lower plasma cholesterol levels. Many physicians recommend that their patients try to maintain cholesterol levels below 200 milligrams per deciliter.Humans do not oxidize cholesterol for energy. Instead, cholesterol is converted to bile acids such as cholic acid and deoxycholic acid in liver tissue. Bile acids and salts are secreted into bile, which passes into the intestine and emulsifies fats for digestion. Although some bile acids may be reabsorbed in the intestine along with lipids, much cholesterol leaves the body in feces in the form of metabolites such as bile acids and salts.
High blood cholesterol is a major womens health issue. More than half of women over age 55 need to lower their blood cholesterol, and a quarter of all American women have blood cholesterol levels high enough to pose a serious risk for coronary heart disease. But dont fool yourself into thinking that high blood cholesterol is a problem only for middle-aged or elderly men and women. In fact, up to one-third of American children from age two through the teenage years have high cholesterol, which can lead to heart disease in adulthood. Guidelines released by the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP), a division of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), in May 2001 and in July 2004, substantially expanded the number of American women and men who need treatment for high cholesterol.

State-of-the-art titanium science, technology, and applications were showcased at the Tenth International Titanium Conference in Hamburg, Germany, 13-18 My 2003. Skillfully chaired by Gerd Lutjering, the conference outdid all previous conferences in this series with more than 730 attendees and in excess of 450 papers. All of the major titanium-producing countries were represented at the conference -United States, Commonwealth of Independent States, Japan, United Kingdom, France, China, and Germany. An interesting development here was the high quality of the presentation aids used by all participants -quite a contrast from the hand-drawn slides used by representatives from China and the Commonwealth of Independent States in the past. It was also apparent that the participants from these countries were cognizant of what it takes to market titanium to the West-quality, consistency, strategic alliances-oh, and cost. The cost theme permeated the conference, both in the formal papers and in hallway discussions. Aerospace was no exception here, with the big commercial guys such as Boeing and AirBus turning to titanium castings to reduce cost and in the military arena, U.S. Air Force programs such as the Metals Affordability Initiative and Forging Supplier Initiative aiming at cost-affordability.

rings, which results in a level of precise detail previously unattainable

to revolutionize the industry. This proprietary process will significantly
add to the revenue potential of TDS.”

TDS is forecasting a profit for the month of August, a tremendous feat for
such an early stage company. Added MacGregor, “We are extremely pleased
with the progress TDS has made since we made our investment in the company,
both in terms of product and in profitability.”

On the surface, the two major articles in this months issue seem very different: one describes recent advancements engineering schools have made in the artificial intelligence field; the other tells how engineering professors can enhance student learning by employing cooperative learning approaches in their classrooms. At the core of each of these endeavors, however, is the need to understand the act of learning. In “Maximizing Instruction Through Cooperative Learning,” page 24, education researchers David Johnson, Roger Johnson, and Karl Smith outline ways professors can successfully introduce cooperative activities into their courses. These individuals considerable research on learning finds that students achieve more when they work in groups that possess five basic elements (positive interdependence, face-to-face promotive interaction, individual accountability, social skills, and group processing) than they do in competitive or individualistic learning experiences. I believe that as researchers in Al and education continue their respective explorations of learning processes, each group will increasingly uncover insights that will advance the progress of the other. For example, as AI researchers discover more about how to design computers to solve problems and identify solutions, they may be able to pass on information about problemsolving methods that would lead to more efficient and effective teaching-learning environments. And as educators learn more about student learning processes, they may be able to enlighten AI researchers on enhanced computer learning algorithms.
Informal learning has become more important. and the role of the workplace learning and performance professional must keep pace. WHAT IS HAPPENING on the ground in the workplace learning and performance profession? To what extent are priorities changing and the focus of activities moving? Ultimately such changes are dictated by the economics of competition and delivery and the new business models that have emerged as a result. In his 2004 book Reason, Robert B. Reich, President Bill Clintons Labor Secretary, argued that in developed economics only two categories of work will grow in numbers. The first will be knowledge workers (he calls them “symbolic analysts”) who are employed in identifying and solving new problems. Computer technology is a given and they require even more tools for mentoring, creating, and communicating. The second category involves personal service. Here value comes from human touch, care, or attentiveness. Reichs argument is that all other work will be done where it is cheapest-these are the jobs that will be outsourced to low wage economies. Reichs observation of our profession demands an answer: If knowledge workers and those delivering personal services will predominate in our future organizations, how should we design and deliver our training, learning and development?
ANY SPACE IS A LEARNING SPACE ON CAMPUS, says Jeff Vredevoogd, Education Solutions Lead at Herman Miller, a furniture design and consulting company. There are formal learning spaces on campus, but just as much takes place after students walk out of class. Herman Miller teamed with the Society for College and University Planning (SCUP) to conduct a survey of higher education planners to find out more about what is driving those learning spaces. The results were released during the 2008 SCUP conference. The big ah-ha we had was the dramatic push toward student and faculty engagement, says Vredevoogd. More than half of respondents said student and faculty engagement was the most valuable aspect of effective learning spaces, up from 29 percent in 2006. Under the same question, 16 percent thought peer collaboration was a valuable aspect, up from 1 percent in 2006. This emphasis reflects recognition of the desire by students to engage with as many people as possible to get as much as they can from their learning experience, says Vredevoogd. He adds that Phyllis Grummon, director of planning and education for SCUP, has also attributed this trend toward employers desire to have employees who are collaborative. Respondents said new needs on campus are now being driven by student expectations (36 percent, up from 9 percent in 2006) and technology (22 percent, up from 7 percent), as opposed to costs, which dropped to 10 percent from 46 percent on the previous survey. They are still worried about costs, but its just a given, Vredevoogd explains.

Louisiana drivers now have another resource available to find the best rate for auto insurance. Consumer Reports, which has offered an auto insurance price service to drivers in several other states, recently extended the program to Louisiana. Thomas Blum, auto insurance price service manager for Consumer Reports, said the company can help consumers find the right offer at the best price with this service.
WE HAVE written about the need for auto insurers to change how they calculate insurance rates. Basing rates on ZIP codes is unfair and discriminates against people who live in cities and poor neighborhoods. Besides, Proposition 103, approved nearly 20 years ago, required the rates be linked to a persons actual driving record and miles driven each year. Unfortunately, the decision will not affect Bay Area drivers. But the fact one insurer broke ranks from the industry suggests others may follow suit.
State reforms give carriers the changes they demanded to keep selling car and truck policies here State Farm had until 2005 to announce its plans, but chose to make its change of heart known before the holidays. “We made our decision earlier than planned in light of the changes that weve seen in New Jerseys insurance environment,” says Ryan Solonia, spokesperson for State Farm Indemnity in Parsippany. State Farm is not alone in basing actions on the Automobile Insurance Competition and Choice Act of 2003. Last Wednesday the Department of Banking and Insurance credited the law with giving insurers the leeway to return some $300 million to 2 million state policyholders in the form of dividends and rate cuts. New Jersey Manufacturers Insurance (NJM) in West Trenton announced the same day it would issue a $59 million special dividend for more than 360,000 policyholders in the state. The bulk of that dividend comes from funds the insurer had held in reserve in case the states Unsatisfied Claim and Judgment Fund for individual medical claims exceeding $75,000 ever defaulted. “The new law creates a new funding mechanism,” says Pat Breslin, assistant secretary for NJM. “That explains the large amount for the dividend.”

Few new words have been coined that are based on the original term, weblog, but now that blog has been clipped from the original, it has taken off with any number of derivatives. Blog is a synonym for weblog, but, unlike weblog, blog has also been verbed, meaning to create a new entry in a weblog, or simply to write, e.g., Here are some photos from the wacky, New York-based BDSM-themed workout that Gory blogged about earlier this week, or I talked with Dave Winer on the phone a little while ago, and I notice hes already blogged the conversation! As the examples show, usage of the verb form is not yet standard; does one blog an event (in the same way one would log it, or note it, or cover it in the journalistic sense), or does one blog about an event (as one would write about or talk about it)? People who keep blogs are known as bloggers as in how about we make tomorrow. a Bloggin Lovefest. Devote one post to a blogger you love. Blogger[TM] is also the name of one of the software tools that allows bloggers to update their weblogs easily mad save older posts automatically in an archive. With the proliferation of wireless networks in hotels and convention centers, it has become relatively easy for bloggers to post to their blogs using properly-equipped laptops while they are actually still witnessing the event they are writing about rather than waiting until later to sum things up. This is called liveblogging as in Donna Wentworth has been liveblogging the proceedings of iLaw Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on Copyright. Liveblogged entries make up for in immediacy what they lack in spellchecking.

Traditionally, postpartum blues and postpartum depression were considered hormonal disturbances, as well as affective disorders occurring after birth. The evolutionary approach originated with questions as: Why should a woman develop such disorders in a time when the baby requires the highest level of care?, Why do these affections appear to the majority of the women (in the Western countries)?, or, Is this an adaptive behavior or an effect of our present way of seeing the birth and the parturient, which is very different for the ancestral one? This ongoing epidemiological study, based on a questionnaire administered to parturient in Bucharest, Romania short time after birth, aims to approach postpartum blues and postpartum depression from the evolutionary perspective. Preliminary results on small samples indicate several possible risk factors.
Traditionally, postpartum blues and postpartum depression were considered hormonal disturbances, as well as affective disorders occurring after birth. The evolutionary approach considers new risk factors deriving from the shift from traditional birth to the stresses inherent to hospitalization. This ongoing epidemiological study, based on a questionnaire administered to parturient in Bucharest, Romania short time after birth, aims to approach postpartum depression from the evolutionary perspective. Logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the odds ration (OR) for the relationship between measures of postpartum depression and postpartum blues and various risk factors based on a sample of sixty-five young mothers. There was an increased risk for postpartum depression and blues for prenatal affective disorders (OR = 6.707, 95% CI = (2.427, 18.533)), abortion intention (OR = 5.532, 95% CI = (1.756, 17,431)), and worries concerning the birth (OR = 4.749, 95% CI = (1.548, 14.568)), but help from the husband during pregnancy appeared to have a protective effect, however not significant (OR = 0.571, 95% CI = (0.307, 1.059)). We concluded that psychological factors were more significant than the traditional ones. Nevertheless, more and deeper research involving larger samples is required.
Puerperal fever was first described by Hippocrates; however, it was not described as a virulent epidemic until the mid-17th century.(1) Today, epidemics are rare, but the disease has not disappeared. Puerperal febrile morbidity is defined as an oral temperature of 38.0[degrees]C (100.4[degrees]F) or higher on any two of the first 10 days postpartum, or a single oral temperature of 38.7[degrees]C (101.6[degrees]F) in the first 24 hours.(2)Postpartum fever is a complication in 2 to 4 percent of vaginal deliveries and in 29 to 95 percent of cesarean deliveries.(3) The rate of endometritis is at least 10 times higher in patients who have a cesarean delivery, compared with patients who have a vaginal delivery. The clinician who practices obstetrics should be aware of current antibiotic choices for treatment of postpartum fever and the modalities available to evaluate patients whose febrile episode does not resolve.(4) This article reviews the causes of postpartum fever and associated risk factors and delineates an approach to this common obstetric complication.Risk factors for each of the described postpartum febrile complications are listed in Table 1. (3)(5)(6)(7)(8)(9) It is important to note that if invasive procedures are performed on a patient in labor who has other risk factors, a higher risk exists for a febrile complication. This is particularly true in the case of endometritis, in which the risk for a febrile complication increases from less than 4 percent in an uncomplicated vaginal delivery to as much as 85 percent in an indigent patient with membranes ruptured for more than six hours and multiple pelvic examinations followed by a cesarean section.(3)
